The longer the current situation goes on the more ups and downs you’re likely to encounter.
If you’ve played defensive until now in 2020, either by scaling back or ceasing trading altogether, it’s not too late to put your foot down in the opposite direction.
This week I ran a poll on LinkedIn.
I asked: If you knew what was going to happen this year this time last year, what would you have done differently?
Which approach would you have taken?
A) More offensive
B) More defensive
C) Both
D) No change in approach
Interesting. So far 43% would have played more offensively. 43% also think they had their approach spot on, even with the hindsight of what a shocker 2020 has been for most.
Two big (contrasting) takeaways
- It’s all very well playing the long game until there’s a global pandemic
- Strategies should still have the long game in mind, because it’s what’s required regardless of a moment in time
That’s my take on these findings – it’s split. The people who voted A thought they could have played it more aggressively last year to better position themselves for what was to come. D’s think that regardless of what’s going on right now, their strategies were still solid.
(If you’re reading this because you saw me post this article link on social, please comment what you took away from the findings, and why.)
I love the fact that most people voted for A, it shows the level of positivity that business leaders have when it comes to taking control of your own destiny. And that’s not changed.
One point worth mentioning though is, we were never going to get accurate data regarding option B – not because it wouldn’t have been a good strategy, but because it might not be something people want to admit to.
The reason I included ‘both’ as an option is I think that’s what I would have done. Gone more offensive in some areas whilst protecting myself in others. Why did very few vote for that? Maybe a lack of full context.
Anyway…

Is it time for you to pivot?
It’s not too late to change tact. I’ve written already earlier this year about how to BE THE MOLE! And on my personal blog about why It’s Time to Turn Defence Into Attack.
Looking at these results, more people wish they’d done this a lot sooner. You can start today. Start playing offensively and take back control. Reinvent your business, refresh your brand, run new marketing campaigns, and get ready to thrive again.
